2002 Lightning Safety Awards
The National Lightning Safety Institute (NLSI), Louisville Colorado
announces winners of the Annual Lightning Safety Recognition Awards.
Recipients are those individuals who provide leadership for lightning
safety issues and who serve as role models for others. This year’s awards
are given in several categories:

Medicine Award
Michael Cherington, MD, Denver, Colorado
For many contributions to lightning safety, including: Founder
of the Lightning Data Center; international author, lecturer,
media consultant, and physician on the medical aspects of lightning
injuries and safety; for leadership in establishing the lightning
trauma center at St. Anthony's Hospital.

Medicine Award
Mary Ann Cooper, MD, University of Illinois at Chicago
For leadership in efforts to raise the levels of lightning safety
awareness; for participation in many USA and international lightning
safety organizations; for medical research skills; and for assistance
provided to many lightning victims and their families.

Individual (USA) Award
Ron Holle, Tucson, Arizona
For many years of public service with NOAA's National Severe
Storms Lab where he was recognized as a national lightning safety
spokesperson; for original research and technical publications;
for efforts in private industry; and for mentoring and encouraging
others in the field.

Individual (International) Award
Aage E. Pedersen, PhD, Honorary Member of the Scientific
Committee of the ICLP, Former Asc. Prof. at TU Denmark
For initiative as a European spokesperson to mobilize the lightning
safety community concerning the requirement for validation and
verification of results of experience and research where criteria
for Standards improvements exist.

US Government (Individual) Award
John Tobias, PhD, US Army Communications Electronics Command,
Directorate for Safety
For pro-active efforts in providing objective information about
lightning safety issues; for engineering publications which have
expanded understanding of lightning behavior; for contributions
as a member of the NFPA-780 Technical Committee and the Department
of Defense Explosive Safety Board Lightning Committee.

The Awards are accompanied by a full scholarship to attend NLSI’s intensive
two day Lightning Safety Workshop. The standard tuition of $895 is waived.
