2004 Lightning Safety Awards

The National Lightning Safety Institute (NLSI) in Louisville, CO announces the 2004 recipients of the Annual Lightning Safety Recognition Awards. Recognized are those groups and individuals who provide leadership for lightning safety issues and who serve as role models for others. This year’s Awards are in several categories:

U.S. Government Service (Individual) Award

Francois Martzloff, National Institute of Science and Technology, Electronics and Engineering Laboratory — For many years of advocacy in the deployment of surge protection devices (SPDs) as an essential component of lightning protection. His  behind-the-scenes influence and IEEE and NIST publications have brought a rational, science-based understanding about SPDs to the lightning protection community as a whole.

U.S. Government Service (Individual) Award

Jacob Struck, U.S. Army, Picatinny Arsenal, NJ — For leadership in the TACOM/ARDEC lightning testing research program. A new testing method has been developed and refined to quantify transfer impedance issues at important facilities. This contribution to the scientific process helps resolve the uncertainty of lightning behavior during conduction through metallic frame components.

Individual (U.S.A) Award

Mitchell Guthrie, Chairman NFPA-780 Technical Committee — For providing dynamic leadership for the NFPA-780 consensus group to advance the national standard for lightning protection, transforming it from a vendor-centered document into a contemporary guideline in harmony with U.S. government and international lightning safety codes.

Individual (U.S.A.) Award

Vladimir Rakov, Professor, Dept. of Electrical and Computer Engineering, University of Florida, Gainsville, FL — For consistent excellence in advancing the understanding of lightning electromagnetics/energy systems through research and in many reviewed journals, and for personal contributions as a member of international scientific organizations and as chairman of some of their committees.
