2005 Lightning Safety Awards

The National Lightning Safety Institute (NLSI) in Louisville, Colorado announces the 2005 recipients of the Annual Lightning Safety Recognition Awards. Recognized are those groups and individuals who provide leadership for lightning safety issues and who serve as role models for others. This year’s Awards are in several categories:

U.S. Government Service (Individual) Award

Joanie Campbell, PE, Command Electrical Engineer, Air Combat Command, U.S. Air Force, Langley, VA — Responsible for guiding lightning protection issues at 15 major U.S. Air Force bases. Areas of concern include maintenance, storage, and other key physical facilities. For many years an advocate of education and training of ACC Base Electrical Engineers in contemporary lightning protection methodologies.

U.S. Government Service (Individual) Award

Rebecca Lopez, Electrical Systems Engineer, Sandia National Laboratories 10861, U.S. Dept. of Energy, Albuquerque, NM — For advancing the understanding of surge protection devices as an integral part of lightning protection at SNL, resulting in the creation of SNL Section 16289 Surge Protection Devices. For leadership as SNL’s specialist for lightning protection.

International Service (Individual) Award

Dr. Munir Ahmed, Executive Director Lightning Awareness Center (LAC) and Technological Assistance for Rural Advancement (TARA), Dhaka, Bangladesh — For providing motivational lightning education leadership in Bangladesh through TARA and LAC. For energetic and original lightning safety programs conducted throughout the country. For encouraging support from USAID and United Nations programs in other South Asian countries.

International Service (Corporate) Award

Barrick Gold Corp., Minera Misquichilca SA, Lima, Peru — Studies performed at Barrick’s Pierina and Lagunas Norte Peru gold mines have led to increased worker safety, improved ore productivity, and more reliable lightning detection systems. Especially recognized are Barrick Vice President - Safety Don Ritz, Barrick Peru President Igor Gonzales,  Barrick Pierina’s Darrell Wagner and Isaias Kleinerman and Barrick Lagunas Norte’s EH Garcia and Orlando Alzamora as stakeholders.
